CW511L

CW511L is a lead-free brass alloy known for its very good resistance to dezincification, making it ideal for use in aggressive water environments and applications requiring high corrosion resistance.

Chemical Composition

• Copper (Cu): 62.5% – 63.5%

• Zinc (Zn): Balance (around 36-37%)

• Lead (Pb): ≤ 0.10%

• Tin (Sn): ≤ 0.10%

• Iron (Fe): ≤ 0.10%

• Nickel (Ni): ≤ 0.30%

• Aluminium (Al): ≤ 0.05%

• Arsenic (As): 0.02% – 0.08%

• Other impurities: ≤ 0.20%

Mechanical Properties

• Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): Minimum 320 MPa

• Proof Stress: Minimum 200 MPa

• Elongation: Minimum 20%

• Suitable for rods and bars with diameters from 6 mm to 60 mm and hex or square bars also available

• Machinability rating around 30-40 compared to free cutting brasses

Physical Properties

• Density: 8.39 g/cm³

• Melting Point: Approx. 1650 – 1660 °F (899 – 904 °C)

• Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 11.6 x 10⁻⁶ /°F (20 - 300 °C)

• Electrical Conductivity: About 28% IACS at 20 °C

Fabrication and Uses

• Excellent for brazing and soldering; good for oxyacetylene and butt welding

• Fair capacity for cold work; excellent for hot forming

• Not recommended for coated metal arc and seam welding

• Mainly used in plumbing fittings, valve components, and regions requiring dezincification resistant materials

• Suitable for components exposed to aggressive waters, including potable water applications
